We left beautiful Ocean Reef Resort and
Yacht Club yesterday morning at 7:00 a.m., for our 10-hour sail to the Berry
Islands – our last long passage.
It was hard to say “good-bye” to the hot
tub and pool, beach, evening entertainment (I sang up a storm at karaoke J), and friends we made there – but we were looking forward to a much
more pleasant crossing than the last two, as the wind had slowed down and the
water was calmer.
And this indeed was the sail we had been
anticipating – 3-foot waves, both sails up, (with the motor, as we had a long
way to go), at 6.5 knots (approximately mph), with the sun shining all day. It
was gorgeous. To keep ourselves entertained we played “chicken” with the many
freighters that crossed our paths, and had the occasional challenge to keep us
on our toes.
The most significant one was looking down
into the boat at one point and seeing tons of water all over the floor. Turns
out our bilge had overflowed, because our bilge pump isn’t working! But our
manual bilge pump came to the rescue – sinking averted!
So here we are in paradise – finally! A
sunny blue-sky day at anchor – this is what it’s all about.
