We woke up yesterday to paradise in
Slaughter Bay (bad name, amazing place!) in the Berry Islands - a gorgeous
turquoise harbour with only 2 cruise boats in sight in the distance and a faux
tiki village constructed specifically for the cruise boat guests on a near-by
island.
We were the only boat in the harbor, and
spent the day hanging on the anchor in the sun, looking down at gin-clear
water. Unfortunately it now contains my favourite blue rug, which fell off while
drying – a gift for Poseidon L. We took the new dinghy out to try and find it – but no luck. So
instead, we went to a deserted beach, populated only by seagulls, and
beachcombed for about an hour.
All was well until evening, when we started
to feel a gentle rocking which eventually built up to a genuine swell. It felt
like the boat was doing the polka – all night!! It was only then that we both
remembered the warning on our charts about “surges” in this harbour – paradise
lost.
So this morning, we high-tailed it out of
there on huge waves crashing over the side again, until we turned down-wind
towards Great Harbour Marina, where we’re comfortably sheltered (with no dancing
J). A fresh lobster-tail Pad Thai made a nice ending to another day
in paradise, found again.
