OK – you can be jealous now – this is as
good as it gets! (And we’d love to share it with you).
We spent two days in Great Harbour Cay
Marina – doing the usual boat jobs, and a few unusual ones (fixing a leaking
stuffing box, straightening the radar scanner, etc.). We also ate fresh conch
salad both days, visited the little nearby village by dinghy, biked to a
gorgeous empty beach and generally kicked back after several rough passages.
Then, yesterday, a perfect 4-hour, blue-sky
sail (with no motor) at 7 knots (fast for us) in 20 knots of wind, took us to
the most beautiful harbour we’ve ever seen. It’s called “Devil’s Cay”, on the
Bahama Bank – and with only three other boats in sight, we’ve been drifting on
our anchor in perfect turquoise water, with white sand beaches all around.
Today, after a swim/bath in the still-cold
ocean off the back of the boat (hardy Canadians :0), and a pancake brunch, we
dinghied to a near-by “blue hole” – amazingly deep, several shades of blue, and
harbouring huge sea turtles that came to the surface to breathe every now and
then. A cave below, with stalactites and stalagmites, provided a gathering spot
for us to visit with two young French Canadians who were also there to see the
sights.
We finished this gorgeous day with a visit
to an iconic beach with palm trees, crashing surf, coconuts there for the picking, several
beach chairs(!) and no one else in sight.
A flaming sunset off the stern of Sea
Change greeted us on our return, as did a couple in a near-by boat whom we had
befriended at the last stop, and with whom we shared drinks and snacks last
evening. We wished each other a good sail to Nassau tomorrow, and went below to
eat dinner – so grateful for having this experience in our lives!
